Office junior to business analyst: Matt Caves on his Commercial Express journey

DATE: 18/06/2019

As part of the Commercial Express 20th birthday celebrations, we spoke to some of the company’s long-serving, key employees for a series of features.

As an office junior, Matt spent his days carrying out basic admin duties and assisting members of staff. That was 14 years ago. Fast forward to the present and Matt is now a full-time business analyst, heading up a team in the IT department.

He joined Commercial Express back in 2005. At the time, there was around 10 members of staff, whereas in 2019, there are roughly 50. Matt has seen the company grow and progress, with more products and technologies being introduced to the business proposition. His journey has been an interesting one, earning promotions, moving across departments and embarking on training courses.

“I started out as office junior, before being promoted to the newly formed retail department where I sold landlords and catering insurance,” said Matt.

“I later became head of that department- a role which I carried out for three years- before moving back into underwriting and taking on a new role assisting with the development of our new system.

“Following this, I transferred into IT full time and through my knowledge and understanding of the company and its systems, became a business analyst in 2016. This is a role which I continue today.”

At Commercial Express, career progression for individuals is a key priority. Matt has excelled in both internal and on-the-job guidance and completed two CII modules, with a view to finishing the third. He has received training from software providers on a range of different areas, from software to coding.

Matt credits Commercial Express with having a ‘family-like ethos.’

He said: “There is a genuine sense of appreciation of hard work and being rewarded for doing a good job, whether through promotion or other means.

“The company is continually evolving and is something you want to be part of, whilst learning and developing new skills along the way. There is also a family-like ethos throughout the business and you feel like you are listened to.

“We have a great team in IT and there is an approachable and open culture across all departments.”

Describing himself as a football obsessive lover of live music, Matt also enjoys a challenge.

“The best part of my role is problem solving and being able to help staff and customers resolve system issues,” he said.

“I also enjoy the challenge of understanding systems and technology, how this impacts the business from an operational perspective and finding improvements to existing processes.”

This year, Commercial Express celebrates its 20th birthday. Having gone from strength to strength during the last two decades, the company is as much about its people as it is about its products.

Thankyou to all the hard-working Commercial Express staff who have made the business what it is today.
