What is a Managing General Agent?

The Managing General Agents’ Association defines a Managing General Agent (or MGA) as “an agency whose primary function and focus is the provision of underwriting services and whose primary fiduciary duty is to its Insurer principal”.

Consequently, Managing General Agent’s perform various functions ordinarily handled solely by insurers, such as binding coverage, underwriting and pricing. Managing General Agents benefit insurers because the expertise they have at their disposal is not always readily available and would be more expensive to develop in-house.
